Description Academic English is a special kind of English that is used in academic writing and other professional contexts. This subject aims to improve students' written communication skills in academic English. The subject content includes English grammar as well as analytical reading and writing in academic English. Students will also learn to identify and to make cogent and sophisticated arguments using various written formats. Student work will be assessed in terms of theoretical and applied knowledge as well as in terms of writing skills.

Restrictions

Students must be enrolled at Western Sydney University, The College. Students enrolled in Extended College programs must have passed 40 credit points of the preparatory subjects in these programs.

On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:

Identify and analyse arguments across different textual genres.
Construct formal and structured responses in academic English.
Develop practical and theoretical skills in formal grammar.
Construct logical arguments.
Engage with a variety of Englishes, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander varieties of English.
Integrate source material into student responses.

- Vocabulary, lexicon and register in Academic English.
- Performance of writing and reading across different academic texts.
- Research, structure, argumentation and referencing in formal writing.
- The sociolinguistics of grammar, accent and registers in different Englishes.
- The semiotics of denotation and connotation in English words.
- Formal and applied grammar.
