Description The aim of this subject is to extend the foundational knowledge relating to the assessment and management of cardiovascular and respiratory patient presentations. The unit combines theoretical and practical aspects to develop knowledge, skills, interpretation and application of diagnostics and clinical decision-making to implement appropriate patient care.

Restrictions

Students must be enrolled in 4790 Bachelor of Paramedicine or 4669 Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedicine).

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this Unit, students will be able to: 

  1. Describe the epidemiology and consequences of select cardiovascular and respiratory pathologies across the lifespan and for diverse populations including Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders
  2. Integrate patient history and assessment to develop evidence-based treatment plans for patients across the lifespan with select cardiovascular and respiratory disorders
  3. Employ appropriate management skills and tools for patients across the lifespan with select cardiovascular and respiratory disorders
  4. Demonstrate clinical reasoning relating to ECG acquisition, interpretation, and appropriate evidence-based management
  5. Plan and manage evidence-based treatment of a patient in cardiac arrest

Subject Content

  1. Pathophysiology of cardiovascular and respiratory patient presentations 
  2. Assessment, treatment, and evidence-based clinical decision-making in relation to cardiac patient presentations throughout the lifespan
  3. Assessment, treatment, and evidence-based clinical decision-making in relation to respiratory patient presentations throughout the lifespan 
  4. Management of cardiac arrest patients
  5. ECG monitoring, analysis, and interpretation
  6. Clinical decision-making related to termination of resuscitation and end of life

Special Requirements

Essential equipment

Students are expected to have a complete WSU student paramedic uniform as described in the paramedicine student uniform guide. No uniform means the student is unable to participate in practical classes or undertake emergency ambulance placement. Students are expected to have their own stethoscope, safety googles, penlight torch and sphygmomanometer.
