Description In this capstone subject students will extend their learning to include evidence-based health care and translation of knowledge to clinical practice. Students will respond, within a team, to emergency calls in the community (through 4-5 weeks of clinical placement) or in simulated laboratory contexts and facilitate the provision of out-of-hospital care within the limitations of the regulator or health care organisations. Students will develop the capacity to critically analyse clinical practice and provide constructive feedback to improve quality of emergency care and patient safety. Students will have the opportunity to implement clinical decision making, use judicious treatments and provide trauma-informed care.

Must be enrolled in 4790 Bachelor of Paramedicine.
Must have completed 160 Credit Points.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this subject, students will be able to: 

  1. Integrate theoretical knowledge and clinical skills to manage health conditions/contexts of varying complexity and acuity within healthcare settings, at the level of a novice Paramedic, in accordance with relevant National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards.
  2. Demonstrate reflective practice to self-identify gaps in knowledge, skills or professional behaviours specific to paramedicine and interprofessional practice.
  3. Critically analyse clinical reasoning/decision-making and clinical management of health care consumers against relevant principles of epidemiology, pathophysiology, evidence-based health care, practice guidelines and professional regulation.
  4. Prioritise patient safety and accountability, clinical leadership and ethical performance within team-based approaches to paramedicine care.
  5. Apply the principles of safe, ethical, legal work practices, and cultural safety, in a healthcare setting at the level of a novice paramedic.
  6. Demonstrate interpersonal communication and medical record keeping giving expression to medico-legal competency at the level of a novice Paramedic.
