Description Most of us probably use the term 'personality' almost every day. Yet the conceptualisation and definition of personality is far from settled. This subject introduces the controversies and debates in the psychology of personality, as well as the major theoretical and applied approaches to its measurement. Emphasis is placed on an understanding of personality research and its implications for the practice of psychology.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Describe the major theories of personality (APAC Graduate Attributes 1.1i, 1.1ii).
- Analyse contemporary personality research to solve scientific problems, including in peer groups (APAC GA 1.1ii, 1.1xii 1.3, 1.5).
- Identify the practical implications of individual differences and personality research to applied psychology (APAC GA 1.1i, 1.1ii, 1.3).
- Identify impacts of cultural context on personality and identity, including from Indigenous Australian perspectives (APAC GA 1.1ii, 1.1xi, 1.2)
- Communicate scientific thinking for a variety of audiences (APAC GA 1.1,1.3, 1.6).

1. Introduction to Personality: What is personality and individual differences?
2. The Psychoanalytic Approach: Freud's psychoanalytic perspective; psychoanalytic alternatives to Freud; Neo-Freudian psychoanalytic perspectives.
3. The Behaviourist Approach: Radical behaviourism; cognitive behaviourism.
4. The Humanistic/Existentialist/Phenomenological Approach
5. The Dispositional Approach
6. Comparisons and evaluations.
7. Expressions of personality
8. Extremes of personality expression: personality disorders
