Description What does a poem look or sound like today? In this subject students examine poetic forms, styles and techniques from various cultures of the 20th and 21st centuries. Students are taught to analyse and write poetry via a series of guided workshop exercises. They learn that writing poetry also involves becoming a skilled reader of and about poetry. Students enrich their knowledge and love of poems by scrutinising a range of poetic types and methods including imagism, metaphor, free verse, humour, spoken word traditions, song-writing, ecological poetries, and visual and digital poetries. No previous experience in poetry writing is necessary.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- write a series of original poems using a range of forms, styles and techniques;
- identify and apply poetic language, forms and methods;
- use drafting, editing and in-class workshopping processes to write better poems;
- analyse ways in which different cultural contexts shape and influence the writing and analysis of poems.

- Students will examine and compare a range of poetic forms, styles and techniques from various cultures of the 20th and 21st centuries including key periods in Australian and American poetry; contemporary poetries in translation; innovative poetics; perf
- students will examine A range of poetry criticism to equip them with Critical skills needed to become better readers of poetry.
- poetry will be studied as A Living art that exists and flourishes in diverse contemporary environments including in books, on streets, on stages and online.
- students will develop A more professional approach to writing poetry including using editing and drafting processes to write better poems, and where appropriate, sharing poems with others.
