Description This subject examines central issues in the philosophy of religion. Students will look at a variety of ideas emanating from a philosophical consideration of religious belief and practice. Issues include arguments for and against the existence of God, conceptions of religious experience and faith, the relationship between science and religion, and religion and ethics.

On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  1. Read representative philosophical texts and perform analysis of their argumentation
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of themes and arguments central to philosophy of religion
  3. Use methods of conceptual analysis as these pertain to philosophy of religion
  4. Produce an extended written argument on a topic of philosophical import
