Description This subject has been developed to introduce students to the procedures and processes associated with the production, isolation, characterization and use of medicinal drugs of plant origin. This subject is taught by the University of Florida as part of a collaborative venture between the University of Florida and Western Sydney University. Students must be enrolled in 3741 Master of Forensic Science, 3742 Graduate Diploma in Forensic Science or 3743 Graduate Certificate in Forensic Science.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Understand the biochemical reactions involved in the production of natural medicinal products
- Understand the effects of external factors on the production of secondary metabolites
- Be familiar with naturally occurring biologically active compounds such as alkaloids and glycosides
- Be familiar with the isolation and structural elucidation of plant derived compounds
- Understand the abuse potential, recognition and analysis of drugs of abuse of natural origin
- Be familiar with the chemistry and pharmacology of herbal remedies. Problems associated with their lack of standardization and potential drug interactions
