Description This subject will investigate 'religion' as an object of historical study. Students will consider a variety of approaches to historical considerations about beliefs, scriptures, and rituals that have come to be defined as religion, as well as those that have not. The subject will examine the development of various religious traditions from its foundation to its present state by exploring them in light of their cultural, political, and social context.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Discuss the history of religion from past to present;
- Recognise and describe key people and periods in relation to the development of religion historically;
- Apply and analyse critical-historical approaches to the study of religion;
- Identify significant influences and/or changes in the process of historical development and the way these may have shaped key features of civilisation up to the present time.

Prehistoric and ancient traditions
South Asia: Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism
East Asia: Daoism, Confucianism, and Shinto
The Middle East: Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam
