Description This subject introduces students to the theoretical and practical aspects of modern paramedicine throughout Australia and internationally. It includes exploration of the roles and responsibilities of paramedics within healthcare systems considering relevant regulatory, ethical, and legal issues. Students will gain foundational practical knowledge in key concepts of paramedicine, in line with standards such as the National Safety and Quality Health Services Standards (NSQHS). Students will also begin to analyse typical out of hospital case scenarios to introduce the application of theory to practical contexts.

Students must be enrolled in 4790 Bachelor of Paramedicine.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this Subject, students will be able to: 

1. Describe the evolving roles and responsibilities of paramedics within healthcare 
2. Apply correct principles of safe practice consistent with the National Safety and Quality Health Services Standards (NSQHS)
3. Employ reflective practice in paramedic contexts 
4. Consider and apply the ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements for Australian paramedicine 
5. Demonstrate appropriate communication and cultural awareness  
6. Describe and apply the components of patient assessment 
7. Explain clinical decision making in paramedicine

Students must have the Western Sydney University student paramedic uniform (pants, long sleeve shirt, polo, safety glasses, safety helmet, non-steel cap black boots, stethoscope, reflective vest and rain jacket).
