Description In this unit students will develop skills for the provision of midwifery care across the childbirth continuum through working with women in a continuity of care model and also practice experience in designated maternity practice areas. Using a woman-centred, primary health care model, students will commence recruitment and follow 10 women throughout their pregnancy, labour, birth and for up to six weeks post birth; and under supervision will provide midwifery care to these women. The unit commences with a one week intensive workshop, to expose the students to an elementary level of understanding and application of midwifery care in the antenatal clinic, antenatal ward, birth unit, postnatal ward and special care nursery in preparation for their employment. Concepts introduced during this intensive week will be covered with more complexity during future subsequent weekly workshops.

Restrictions

Students must be enrolled in 4697 Graduate Diploma in Midwifery and be a registered nurse employed in a participating NSW Health Local Health District facility in the position of a midwifery student.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:

1. Communicate effectively with women, and colleagues, in an open and respectful way;
2. Undertake screening, assessment and care of women during pregnancy, labour and birth and the postnatal period;
3. Relate anatomy and physiology of pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period to the care of a woman and her newborn/s;
4. Conduct assessment and care of the neonate;
5. Demonstrate safe Midwifery standard of practice and capacity to critically reflect on the professional requirements for midwifery practice.
