Description This unit focuses on the interrelationships between image and text in children's literature. The unit examines both picture books and other image-based children's texts, including electronic texts and graphic novels. The unit will examine children's texts as cultural artefacts, theories of visual literacy and how image and text combine to create meaning. Students will have the opportunity to create their own picture book for their final project.

Learning Outcomes
- Identify children's texts as cultural artefacts produced in and through discourse that arise in particular social, historical contexts
- Employ the concept of 'visual literacy' to explore how children/young people read and understand 'visual' texts
- Identify and engage in key debates around children, childhood and children's literature
- Compare and evaluate different perspectives for analysing how images and text combine to create meaning
- Undertake close critical analysis of the visual aspects of children's texts and of the relationships between images and written text
- Apply the knowledge gained in the subject to design their own picture books
