Description In the last decades there has been a surge in Islamic consciousness in Musllim communities across the globe. Islamic history has been punctuated by periods of revivalist activity and its hallmark always has been a desire for the return to Islamic origins - the basics of the faith as enshrined in the islamic scripture. This unit explores the phenomenon of contemporary Islamic revivalism. The unit contrasts contemporary Islamic revivalism with earlier expressions. It aims to demonstrate that contemporary Islamic revivalism has manifested itself in a multiplicity of forms as a defensive reaction to an epoch characterised as modernity.
