BUSM 3096 Sport Industry Internship

Description This subject provides students with an opportunity to engage with the sport industry through an internship or work integrated learning experience. Students are provided with a unique opportunity to develop their management skills through observation of sport management practitioners and learn through a practical "hands-on" setting. Under the guidance of an accomplished industry professional and academic mentor, students apply theoretical concepts, knowledge and skills developed through workshops in professional sport, recreation and aligned settings. Students engage in peer review, developing skills in giving and receiving feedback in a responsible and constructive manner. This subject provides a foundation to critique the professional practice of sport and allied services, to network with sport organisations and seek out ongoing employment in the sector.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:

  1. Critique the professional practice of sport and allied organisations. 
  2. Reflect upon personal values, experiences and expectations related to the internship or work integrated learning experience.
  3. Evaluate contemporary managerial practices of sport or related organisations. 
  4.  Analyse the diverse departments within a sport or related organisation and their engagement with stakeholders. 
  5. Communicate clearly and concisely to diverse audiences in a range of professional formats. 
  6. Engage effectively in peer review, providing and receiving feedback in a responsible and constructive manner.

  1. Sport management career readiness and employability skills development 
  2. Professional portfolio development 
  3. Supervised internship hours jointly supervised/facilitated by an experienced sport management practitioner and WSU academic mentor 
  4. Professional and personal ethics in/through sport business practice 
  5. Critical reflection on self and others' experiences and interpretations while completing internship hours
