Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this subject, students will be able to:

1. Compile a list of basic construction documentation requirements.
2. Interpret and apply architectural and technical drafting standards and symbols.
3. Recognise basic housing types from colonial times to the present.
4. Describe standard house construction materials and methods.
5. Interpret design ideas and represent those ideas on paper.
6. Differentiate and employ site plans, survey plans, floor plans, cross sections, elevations, roof plans and reflected ceiling plans.
7. Demonstrate competence in the use of the program ArchiCAD to produce the required documentation for a standard brick veneer house.
8. Produce A3 sized plans from the ArchiCAD program and present them in both hard copy and PDF file format for assessment purposes.
9. Generate door, window and finishes schedules from either the ArchiCAD program or as an Excel spread sheet.
10. Generate a specification for the preliminaries section and four trade sections suitable for use with the brick veneer house plans.

Subject Content

This subject provides students with an introduction to elements of graphic communication skills necessary to comprehend various building types in plan, section, elevation, isometric and perspective views.

The subject also introduces students to basic CAD (Computer Aided Design) concepts and skills.

Students will also be required to develop appropriate analytical and problem solving skills in dealing with a realistic building project.
